A Little Bit About Me
Over my 40-year career, I’ve worked on many projects involving writing, editing, and/or proofreading. These have ranged from editing and producing newsletters, developing media relations campaigns, and writing and editing feature stories, obituaries, campus communications, and speeches to formulating, editing, and proofreading event programs, and developing and producing videos and special exhibitions.
As a freelance writer, I’ve completed multiple assignments for Sportscaster magazine and The Ride: East Coast Bike Culture, among other publications. For the former, I wrote a story exploring the potential for success of two women’s professional basketball leagues (ABL and WNBA) that formed after the 1996 Olympics, and interviewed Boston University hockey player Travis Roy for a profile piece following the tragic on-ice incident that led to him becoming quadriplegic. I worked on the fledgling WNBA media guide, interviewing 20 of the first 32 players signed to the league, compiling their bios and identifying stories for the league’s media office. My interviews included one in Spanish, with a player who was not yet fluent in English. I also wrote profile stories on various ABL personnel, including former Celtics great K.C. Jones, for that league’s magazine.
Beyond writing and editing, I ran a writing internship that I established at Albert Einstein College of Medicine for graduate (Ph.D.) students and postdoctoral research fellows who wished to improve or expand their writing skills; some had the goal of finding writing jobs within industry, since fewer than 20% of postdocs find jobs within academia. Nearly two-thirds of these interns spoke and wrote English as a second, third, or fourth language. As their mentor, I sought to offer each of them writing opportunities that fit with their respective proficiency with English and to provide them with the guidance that could be most useful to their individual needs and goals.
I am a writer of children’s literature, focused mainly on picture books, chapter books, and middle grade novels. I’m from an historic hamlet (Tappan, NY) that figures significantly in our nation’s foundation, so I love learning about history—ours and that of other countries and cultures. I’m also an avid cyclist who has completed many miles of riding, including lots of centuries mostly connected to fundraising for various charities. I also love to play basketball, especially the game of H-O-R-S-E, though H-I-P-P-O-P-A-T-A-M-U-S is more fun because it lasts longer! I can often be found wherever hiking leads to a magnificent view, or curled up with a good book.
